Types of Ornamental Fence Post Caps

Ball post caps have a square base plate with a ball mounted on top. These fit externally to the post, sliding right over the post and using a rubber mallet to tighten the fit. They are finished as black powder-coated galvanized aluminum and are available in square sizes of 2”x 2”, 2 ½” x 2 ½”, 3” x 3”, and 4” x 4”.

Dome post caps have a unique embossed dome shape with a flattened top. These fit externally to the post and feature two internal tabs for gripping support. These posts are offered as galvanized steel, which can be painted, or black powder-coated galvanized steel and are available in square sizes of 2” x 2”, 2 ½” x 2 ½”, 3” x 3”, 4” x 4”, and 6” x 6”. For wood posts square 3 ½” x 3 ½” or 5 ½” x 5 ½” dome post caps may be used.

Flat top post caps have a unique embossed geometric square or rectangular shape with a flat top. These differ from dome post caps as they feature a crisp embossed line up to the flattened top. These posts fit externally to posts, sliding over the top of posts. Flat top post caps vary in finish including galvanized steel and black powder-coated galvanized aluminum. These posts are available in square sizes of 1 ½” x 1 ½”, 2” x 2”, 2 ½” x 2 ½”, 3” x 3”, 4” x 4”, and 6” x 6” or rectangular sizes of 1 ½” x 3 ½” and 3 ½” x 5 ½”.

Nail-In post caps have the same appearance as flat top post caps but rather than sliding over the post these will require a single nail to pin the cap in place. These posts are made of black polypropylene and are available in square sizes of 3 1/2” x 3 ½” and 5 ½” x 5 ½” used for 4” x 4” wood and 6” x 6” respectively.
