What Is An Ornamental Female Gate Hinge?

Female gate hinges connect to the gate’s frame and the male hinge. Because of its design, the female and male gate hinge set is a popular gate-fence connector option for square ornamental fencing. Pintle hinges, or pintle and strap hinges, originate from medieval Europe when blacksmiths needed large, easy-to-install hinges for fortress-like doors to open wide without damaging the edges of the door frame.

Pintle and strap hinges have an interesting origin, but they also offer advantages compared to the common pin hinges. The pintle and strap hinges are two components rather than three; they do not require a pin. Pintle hinges are stronger than pin hinges, which is why they are designed for and used for gates, barn doors, solid wood doors, and various types of ornamental fencing. Pintle hinges are more decorative and are used in contemporary design, including industrial and farmhouse designs. Pintle hinges require less maintenance. The pintle on the male side of the gate hinge sits internally to the female side of the gate hinge, allowing it to move smoothly without regular lubrication.

Female gate hinge connectors are specifically designed with a “strap” or loop to accept a male gate hinge’s pintle. This will allow for smooth opening and closing movement around the edges of the square fence and gate components. The female gate hinge attaches to the gate frame, and the male pintle sits internally in the female gate hinge’s loop. Both hinge parts will be secured to their respective gate components using a carriage bolt and nut of the appropriate length and width.

For ornamental fencing and gates, the popular choice is black powder-coated hinges, though you may choose the standard steel female gate hinges if you desire. All square female gate hinges are offered as 9-gauge galvanized steel, and we offer hinges for various gate frame sizes.

When determining which gate hinges you need, remember you will need two female gate hinges and two male gate hinges per gate, the gate frame size, and which color you prefer.
